Net zero housing proposal wins William Sutton Prize

Posted on 15 December 2023

The requirement for non-combustible materials in high-rise buildings makes achieving net-zero housing particularly challenging. But what if major housebuilders committed to constructing all homes under 5 storeys from natural materials?

This would make a major contribution towards the drive to genuinely net zero housing. Further if these materials were sourced in the UK it would reduce transportation, contribute to biodiversity, stimulate reforestation and help stimulate the UK’s green economy. These were the underlying principles behind our winning submission to the William Sutton Prize.

These principles were developed in conjunction with a new place-specific vernacular of architecture; contemporary, cost-effective, highly airtight and well insulated, designed for a warming climate and constructed entirely from locally sourced natural materials including timber, hempcrete insulation, lime render and natural stone.

With the award of £20,000 we’re excited to be working with Clarion Housing to make this vision a reality.
