The Caring City, Ethics of Urban Design, written by Juliet Davis, explores how a philosophy of caring can improve city environments and communities while promoting an ethical and humane approach to urban development. She includes case studies to illustrate her ideas, including our project, Marklake Court, a resident-led scheme featuring 27 new flats and maisonettes shaped through extensive local consultation and care.

Excerpt: Care for place, it seemed, was not only predicated on preserving place-based relationships and feelings of affiliation but also on building a sense of rights-rights to contribute to place making, as in Henri Lefebvre’s concept of the ‘right to the city’. For [Hari] Phillips, the project was an exemplar of what sustainable urbanism should both involve and forge. As he put it, “If you can build a building that a community loves, feels ownership over, wants to cherish, take care of, welcome into its community, then that’s got to be positive- the most sustainable thing you can do”.
