This proposal for a new 14 storey tower comprising 25 new affordable homes has been designed in close collaboration with local residents. The project has been facilitated by a proposed land swap with Transport for London who intend to build a new office building above Southwark Station adjacent.
The masterplan includes the retention of the existing Styles House tower and a new TMO hall all nestled within newly landscaped gardens. The new buildings are designed to maximise communal garden space and to retain valued views of London from the existing building.
The project is situated in an area undergoing dramatic change; as such, the architecture of the new tower and hall mediates between the existing and emerging contexts. With a façade composed of glazed ceramic tiles, the terracotta tones which cover the majority of the building references the existing Styles House, while the patterns on the façade will harmonise with the vertical patterns proposed for TfL’s new building adjacent. To minimise the embodied energy of the proposed building, a hybrid structure of steel frame with CLT floors has been developed. Through a highly insulated and airtight envelope with the use of PVs and air-source heat pumps the building will see a 48.3% improvement on Part L.
