These projects are the first of nine sites being developed by London Borough of Sutton for affordable housing across the borough as part of a programme of new council housing. The first three sites; Richmond Green, Century House and Ludlow Lodge, provide 93 new homes with a mix of house and flats for social rent. Each of the designs draws on the qualities of the local context to make a very specific and tailored response.
At Ludlow Lodge, the proposed buildings are located close to a listed church and between two conservation areas and have been sensitively designed to respond to the ecclesiastical architecture of the neighbouring buildings.
Richmond Green occupies a long, linear site fronting on to the River Wandle. A terrace of houses with link blocks addresses the river whilst preserving existing views for adjacent residents. Dual-aspect dining rooms in the link blocks look towards the river and address rear gardens.
Century House is arranged as a shared-surface mews flanked by short terraces of two and three storey houses that nods to the local Arts and Crafts vernacular. Sawtooth roofs are orientated towards the south to optimise solar panels.
