A street view of a residential area with modern brick row houses lining both sides. There are trees planted along the road, and several people are walking or gathered together. The sky is partly cloudy, and the street is paved with cobblestones.

The proposal for Station Site, South Ockendon, utilises a brownfield site to deliver 38 new homes in Thurrock. The site holds several constraints; noise pollution from the adjacent railway, railway line access needed for maintenance, and the demand for high-quality family homes with safe, engaging amenity and boundaries.

The design features three housing types, including a terrace of 3 and 4 storey mews style properties offering a more intimate street character and communal atmosphere. The homes are arranged on either side of a central accessway, which cleverly allows maintenance ability through the site for the railway while providing an opportunity for communal amenity, dedicated play space, and passive surveillance from private terraces. Upper floor flats and duplexes have been designed as ‘walk-up flats’, providing the majority of dwellings to have front doors on the street.
